about

Gavri Tov Yares grew up in the suburbs of South Jersey. At the age of nine, he began studying the contrabass at the Cherry Hill Public Schools’ summer enrichment music program. Yares had no idea that the string bass would become such a driving force in his life. The contrabass has taken Yares all the way to Carnegie Hall, the Knitting Factory, and Makor at the 92nd Street Y. While studying music at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, Yares was very fortunate to study alongside Timothy Cobb of the New York Metropolitan Orchestra and David Grossman of the New York Philharmonic. As a classical musician, Yares has performed and recorded with the Philharmonic of Southern New Jersey, the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra, and the Rutgers University Wind Ensemble. Outside of the classical realm, Yares has performed with David Freeman’s Merkava, Watchung Ridge, the Jazz Doctors, Ami Chai Yares, Dan O’Dea, Josh Gelles, Justin Bulava, Chaim Roberts, The Shuk, and Rooftops.

As a musician, Yares has always been interested in various styles of folk music – ranging from American Bluegrass to Irish reels to Chassidic nigguns. He has furthered his study of Jewish and Klezmer music under Hankus Netsky and Jim Guttmann of the Klezmer Conservatory Band and has attended a workshop on traditional Iraqi Jewish music conducted by Israeli oud player and violinist Yair Dalal. Presently, Yares is employed as an orchestra and jazz teacher at the West Orange High School in New Jersey.
